Q.
How long have you been together?
A. We have been together for seven years. My brother David started
the band; I joined as the lead singer. We did gigs and got a
record deal, it was very unspectacular.
Q. Did you get help from your father? (Stephen and David’s
father was a famous 60’s radio DJ called Zaki)
A. No, we didn’t tell people that he was our father because
we didn’t want that to influence the way people thought
of us as a band.
Q. I read that your backing singer Helmut left in January, why
was this?
A. He was never in the band, he’s just a friend of ours
who sang with us for a while, and then he left to do his own
thing.
Q. In which country is your music most popular?
A. Belgium, we have a gold record in Belgium, which means we
have sold 30,000 copies of our album. Our music is also very
popular in Holland and France but it is harder to get a gold
record in Holland than it is in Belgium.
Q. How would you describe your style of music?
A. It is really hard to do this; we just do our own thing. We
have over a thousand different influences. Some people say that
we make pop, rock music but we also use samples with a hip-hop
beat.
Q. Why have the rest of the band apart from you two brothers
been coming and going over the years?
A. The people in our band are from our hometown; some have left
to do other things. When people leave we don’t look for
people to replace them, people from our hometown just join in,
like Helmut.
Q. Who has influenced your music the most why and how?
A. Our music is influenced by every kind of music rock, pop
and even techno.
Q. How many languages do you sing in?
A. We only sing in English.
Q. Being brothers do you ever have arguments or just get bored
with each other’s company?
A. Yeah we argue with each other constantly, but its ok. I would
rather leave the band than loose my brother though, if the arguments
were that bad. After all it’s only a band, David is more
important.
Q. What are you doing in London, England at the moment?
A. We were DJ ing at a club in London last night called trash
and in Leeds the night before DJ ing there we are going home
tonight. We are coming over next week to record the video for
our next single. We are also playing at Glastonberry, T in the
park and V 2000 this summer, I hope it doesn’t rain; I
don’t like it when it rains.

A. We are recording our new album in October and November, we
are always writing songs.

A. David and Me write the songs, because we do it the best.
We have our own recording studio at home and we mix everything
at the same time.
Q. What is your favourite city in Europe and why?
A. Barcelona because it’s European but still Spanish.
Its really laid back and it has some cool architecture it’s
also near the sea.
Q. What does the future hold for Soulwax?
A. I don’t know, I never look into the future it will
be good and full of surprises I hope.
