Inside Info - Soulwax
We give you the lowdown on Belgium nutters, Soulwax... |
| Brothers
Stephen and David Dewaele are unable to tell you their influences.
This may have something to do with the fact their father was
a famous radio DJ in 1960s Belgium, meaning they grew up in
a house first to get the new EMI and Apple releases and where
they would come down to breakfast to find the Small Faces asleep
in the kitchen. Growing up surrounded by thousands of British
and American records has left them with what Stephen describes
as an emotional bond with vinyl. It is this background of 60s
and 70s music that the band feels makes them stand apart from
other bands their age. After all, this is a band that has done
covers of T-Rex, Small Faces, Japan and Nik Kershaw as well
as DJing as The Flying Dewaele Brothers. Not content with touring
with the band and DJing, the brothers also dabble in re-mixing
tracks by other bands, such as the French band Tahiti 80 and
Muse, merely because they enjoy doing it. As DJs David feels
they've proven that you don't need any particular skills to
be good - in their eyes a good DJ is one who can put on a top
tune rather than be a technical expert. Which brings us very
neatly to their current single 'Too Many DJs', which originally
came out in the UK last year but was re-released this week.
For the video the band went through the Belgian yellow pages
looking for people who DJ in their spare time to come and lip
sync to the track. Since the video the DJs have all said they've
been inundated with calls for work and when Soulwax were asked
to perform to track at a Belgian Awards ceremony, something
they hate, they called in all the DJs again and got them to
perform as Soulwax on stage. Who said the Belgiums were dull?
