Stephen and David did a 'Session Obsession' on Radio 1, broadcaast
on Friday (23.2.2001). What follows is a transcription of what
they said. It is very good and well worth listening to! (see
the bottom of the page for a link to the audio on the BBC Radio1
Website)
Thanks to Steph for transcribing it for me

Session Obsession
< Donna Legg introduces them saying they're all great in
bed >
Stephen 'Hi, erm, I'm Steph from Soulwax and next to me is David.'
David 'Hello, and you're listening to our session obsession'
First Single:
Roland Rat - Rat Rapping
David 'The first single I ever brought was 'Rat Rapping', by
Roland rat. It was when I was ten years old, I came over for
the summer and I loved Roland rat, I just loved the thought
of a rat rapping.'
Human League - 'Holiday 80' inc. Gary Glitter's 'Rock 'n'
Roll'
Stephen 'My first single I brought was by the Human League called
'Holiday 80', and there's a really good, cool version of 'Night
Clubbing' on there and 'Rock and Roll' by Gary Glitter. Its
like a cover version, it's really, really good'
First Album:
Masters of Reality
David 'One of the first albums I brought was Masters of Reality.
Masters of Reality is an American band, very, very, very good,
very underrated. It's a very important album in the making of
Soulwax' (sniggers)
Worst Record:
Mötley Crue - Dr Feelgood
David 'One of the last, hip records I've ever brought (sniggers).
It's very very bad, 'Dr. Feelgood' by 'Mötley Crue'.
Crush:
Kylie Minogue
David 'I didn't have any posters on the wall of something but
I always liked Kylie Minogue. Ever since 'I Should Be So Lucky',
I, er, really dug her style, man. (more sniggering) She looks
amazing now.'
Charlotte Gainsbourg
Stephen 'There was a single by Serge Gainsbourg who's a French
artist. He did song with his daughter, Charlotte. Its called
'Lemon Incest'. I kinda fancied her, I still do, but, she's
not like a pop artist, she's actually an actress.'
Morning Music:
Virgin Suicides Soundtrack
Stephen 'Early in the morning.' '.Realistically I think it would
be 'The Virgin Suicides' soundtrack. Its nice, easy.' '.And
it's a really good album for a Sunday morning'
Soulwax track they are more proud:
Conversation Intercom
David 'I'm the proudest of 'Conversation Intercom'. We're touring
out new record, and we've been touring for two and a half years
on this record. We, you grow tired of your music and it's with
ups and downs, but that one I never grow tired of. Its I think
still, even when we play it now, I think its still very relevant.'
First Gig:
Mink de Ville (with parents)
David 'I think my first ever gig was Mink de Ville. My parents
took me to Mink de Ville, They must have put me somewhere by
the side of the stage because I remember that the next day in
the papers there was this picture of Mink de Ville in the background
and me.'
Best Gig:
First time Stephen saw Prince
Stephen 'For musical memories, um, one has to be, for me, the
first time I saw Prince. And I still remember to this day, everything,
cause it made a big, big, big impression on me. At the beginning
it started out and they had, like, a black curtain and they
started playing a song, its called 'Around the World in a Day'.
And they didn't open the curtain for, like, four minutes in
the song and, like, everyone was going crazy, like, 'what's
happening?' and you can hear the band playing and see the light
and then at one point it just like 'whooa'. They dropped the
curtain and, like, all the lights went into the public and I
remember seeing it and I was like (draws in gasp type breath
sharply) and it was so exciting, for me, it was just really,
really, really, really, exciting.'
Recommend a Record:
Snow Patrol Album - 'When It's All Over We Still Have To Clear
Up'
Stephen 'The record we would recommend the listeners of the
evening session. I'm gonna go for, um, the 'Snow Patrol' album.
I think it was one of the most refreshing things to come out
of England.
Neil Young's - 'Trance'
David 'There's a really cool Neil Young album called 'Trance'.
Apparently he hates it, it's the only record where he's experimenting
with synths and vo-coders (sniggers). It's like a standard Neil
Young song but with bleeps and vo-coders.'
Above all:
Get Neil (from 'The Young Ones') 'Neil's Heavy Concept Album'
Stephen 'I would have to go for, um, you know the series 'The
Young Ones'? Neil made a record called 'Neil's Heavy Concept
Album'. That's the best. 'The Hole In My Shoes' on it, but there's,
like, an even better song on it, it's the song where he has
to go and pick up hamburgers for all his friends an he's like.
(trails off) And he comes to a crossroads and he has to... (hehe)
its really funny, it's a concept album and it's the best. 'Neil's
Heavy Concept Album', if you find it, buy it, it's very, very
funny.'
