They grew up in a mound of vinyl, present their own TV and Radio show in Belgium, and the last album they bought was Fiona Apple. They are the brothers Stephen and David Dewaele, the fearless leaders of funkbunkmetalrock band Soulwax.

Q: When did you first start performing?
Stephen Dawaele: When we were teenagers we started our first band.
David Dawaele: But actually, we started a lot earlier than that. Our father was a DJ (the first DJ in Belgium to play Small Faces!), so we were always surrounded by music. It was the natural thing to do.

Q: What's been your biggest thrill so far in your career?
SD: Tonight!
DD: Humm?.I think the biggest thrill so far came this summer when we were doing our radio show on Studio Brussels (94.5 every Sat. from 1:00-2:00pm). Basically what happened is that we re-mixed our song "Saturday", with Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", and someone downloaded it on the Internet. It got passed around, and soon became #2 on our Studio Brussels listener call-in charts. SD: Not bad for a record that never existed! At the same time, "Too Many DJs" went to #1 in Belgium.

Q: What do you like best, live performances, DJ-ing, or TV presenting?
DD: All of those are great, but what I like best is the writing and recording part of it. When you're in the studio, you can get the idea out of your head, and play around with it until it works. And although a live performance can be exhilarating, it can also be frustrating because there is no central control over what could happen. The PA system could blow, the monitors could melt, the audience may be off.
SD: Yeah, that's right!

Q: Your press release describes your sound as "James Hall jamming with Soundgarden, tripped up by Beck, and you're half-way there"?..What's the other half?
DD: I don't know why people always label us like that. It's hard to define what we do or play, because we play a lot of everything. SD: We like to play music, whichever way it comes out!
DD: OK, if I'd have to, I'd say the other half is Prince jamming with Basement Jaxx, topped by Kyuss! Cool!

Q: What would be your ultimate gig/tour?
DD: Wow?I think it would be great to play with Radiohead, Beck, The Foo Fighters, and REM.

Q: All in one night?
DD: Of course!

Q: What was the first album you bought, and the last album you bought?
DD: My first album I ever bought was when I was 10 years old, and my dad brought me to the UK. It's quite embarrassing, but I bought Roland Rats. It's a rat rapping. And I bought it! The last album I bought was today, I bought the new Beck album. It's superb!
SD: My first album? Oh, it's great! I was 12 and bought a wonderful K-Tel compilation called "Axe Attack"! It was a great metal compilation, filled with the stars of metal? you know, Tigers of Pangtang, Motorhead, Girl's School, Saxon, you know! And my last one?
DD: Today- you bought the new Fiona Apple!
SD: Yes, she's great, too!

Q: Do you have any future projects coming up?
DD: We've got our American Stateside tour, which will be great! Our U.S. record label is Almo Records, founded by Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss of A&M.
SD: They've been great and our currently sorting out a cool UK and USA tour.

Q: Any predictions for Soulwax?
DD: You never know what could happen! We never expected our new album "Much Against Everyone's Advice" to be released in the UK, or the USA! Our UK fan base is an added bonus, and it's growing every time we come here.
SD: We'll rock until we get tired!
