Review
from Music365.com
The Belgians: world renowned for their ales, moules, Jacques
Brél and er, that's about it. But perhaps rockin' pisstakers
Soulwax are about to change all that. This five piece take to
the lowly ULU stage like they're playing the Wembley Arena,
and they're suited and booted with enough brash attitude to
show most British bands up as the miserable dullards they truly
are.
Right from the kickoff, they're setting the place ablaze with
power-rock chords, launching into their current album's title
track 'Much Against Everyone's Advice'. The band are tight and
unrelenting - these guys know how to perform. With the help
of the artfully arranged strip lights and some Gary Numan-flavoured
moves, the Dewaele brothers, frontman Stephen and David on guitar,
lead us from the poppy, Nik Kershaw-esque 'Saturday' to the
Led Zep intro of 'Conversation Intercom'. The boys' wide range
of influences and their background in DJing make for an irresistible
cocktail of electronic beats and heavy guitar riffs.
Just when you think you're getting comfortable with the fact
that a lot of these tunes are really '80s pastiche, the quirky
humour reaches new and dangerous levels. 'This is where we're
gonna get wicked!' Stephen warns; out comes the Casio guitar
and David boldly offers up his rendition of Europe's 'The Final
Countdown'. This sidles into the Backstreet Boys' 'Everybody'
and ends in a crucifixion of Prince's 'Pop Life'. You can't
help but laugh and sing along.
But not only do they take the piss, they rock out big time,
reiterated by their karate kicking encore of a Soundgarden track,
joined by two mullet sporting, guitar wielding Mexicans from
support band Titan. Sound tasteless? Absolutely, and surreal
too, but ultimately it's a relief to see a band abound with
catchy tunes who don't take themselves too seriously. Even if
they are Belgian...
